Bamanga Tukur Reacts To Polls Loss

Following the massive loss suffered by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded National and State elections across the country, a former National Chairman of the party has revealed what he did.

Nigerian Pilot reports that Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, on Thursday revealed that he warned the party before it lost most seats in the just-concluded general elections to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with newsmen in Yola, Adamawa State capital, Tukur blamed the party’s defeat on lack of internal democracy in the conduct of its affairs.

The former national chairman further hinted that due to the imminent consequences inherent in disregarding internal democracy.

Tukur also disclosed that he had been advocating for its entrenchment in the party for long and regretted that the failure to adhere to his advice led to the humiliating defeats suffered by the PDP.

“We have been preaching election not selection, internal democracy not imposition. Anywhere it was done, it will leave a bitter pill in the mouth,’’ he said.

Tukur, who used the medium to congratulate the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, governors and legislators, tasked them to ensure that peace and unity reign in the country, pointing out that they are prerequisites to an enduring development.

“We like to congratulate elected leaders and legislators and those who participated but could not make it, there is another contest. I salute all of them,’’ Tukur said.

The former national chairman pleaded all PDP members to remain resolute and not allow the defeat suffered affect their morale.

He explained that elections were like football competitions in which one team may emerge winner today and the defeated team may emerge winner tomorrow.

Tukur, therefore, charged party members to go back to the drawing board to re-strategise and rectify the wrongs they did in order for the party to regain its lost glory and take back power.

The APC won a total of 19 states in the governorship election, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the country, while the PDP won seven states.

Bamanga tukur was the embattled former national chairman of the PDP. He was removed and succeeded by Adamu Muazu over alleged high handedness after protest from some aggrieved PDP governors.

Tukur is a resident of Adamawa State and was once the governor of the old Gongola State, which comprised Adamawa and Taraba States. He was also a former member of the PDP board of Trustees.

He is a former military officer, who became a prominent Nigerian businessman and politician. He served as Minister for Industries in the administration of General Sani Abacha during the 1990s.
