12 Facts Fvery Student Should Know About NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC) functions as a coordinating body responsible for the “orderly development and management” of university education in Nigeria.

Working with the Universities, both the Federal Government and State Governments and other stakeholders, the Commission’s main mandate is the improvement of the quality of tertiary education and graduates of the nation’s university system.

Here are some facts you should know about the NUC:

NUC was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the Cabinet Office.

In 1974, NUC became a statutory body

Prof. Jibril Muhammad Aminu is the first Executive Secretary (ES), serving from 1975–1979

Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON is the current ES of the NUC. He assumed office on August 3, 2006

NUC is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME)

NUC has a Governing Council headed by the Board Chairman

The present Governing Board of the NUC was re-constituted on Monday 28th October, 2013 with Sen.Dr. Amadu Ali,fss,CON, GCON as Board Chairman

NUC has twelve Departments; Department of Academic Standards, Department of Inspection and Monitoring, Department of Management Support Services, Department of Students Support Services, Department of Research and Innovations, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of Finance and Accounts, Depatment of Quality Assurance, Depatment of Physical Planning and Development, Department of Open and Distance Education, Liason Office Department and the Executive Secretary’s Office.

Each of department of the NUC is headed by a Director.

The national headquarters of the NUC is located at Aja Nwachukwu House, No. 26, Aguiyi Ironsi Street Maitama District, P.M.B. 237, Garki G.P.O., Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria.

The Commission has four main functions:

Granting approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities;

Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities

Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities

Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities
