About two hundred and forty trucks loaded with textile materials and other general goods are billed to arrive Nigeria through the Magama/Jibiya border of Katsina state, customs area comptroller for Kaduna/Katsina command, Maitama Kura has said.
Kura disclosed this at the Magama/Jibiya post when he led other officials of the service and relevant stakeholders on examination of the goods.
He added that about 30 smaller trucks carrying tiles and kitchen utensil were also scheduled to arrive through the Magama/Jibiya border.
He said that the 240 trucks carrying textiles materials and general goods had been cleared to pass through the border after payment of import duty of N273 million, assuring that each of the trucks would be examined so as to avoid importation of illicit goods.
“We are here to examine these trucks to ensure that no illicit materials or arms and ammunition are imported. The examination is also to ensure that the goods in the vehicles conform with the particulars signed by the importers,” he enthused.
Kura, however, dispelled rumours that goods coming into the country through the Jibiya border were not being examined, insisting that the command carried out thorough examination of all goods to ensure relevant levies and fines were paid.
He noted that due to diligent inspection by officers and man of the Customs service manning the border, there had never been any case of the importation of arms and ammunition through the border.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the Customs Controller disclosed that the multi million naira goods inspection bay at border has stopped working since the last one year stressing that the Service had written several correspondence to the operator to affect repair but got no response.
