Senate President: ‘Why North-Central, Akume Deserve Position’

The North-Central Grassroots Alliance (NGA) has called on the president-elect, General Muhammdu Buhari, and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the office of the Senate President to the North-Central geopolitical zone and consequently support the candidacy of Senator George Akume for the position in the incoming 8th National Assembly.
The group in a press statement jointly signed by Barrister Chris Idu and Engr. Innocent Otanwa, its chairman and secretary respectively, and issued to journalists in Abuja yesterday, said in order to consolidate the landslide victory recorded by the APC in the last general elections, the president-elect and the party must ensure the enthronement of an independent, dynamic, focused and a reforms-oriented National Assembly leadership.

“This can only be achieved when men of proven track record of hard work, integrity, competence and loyalty to their fatherland are encouraged to take charge of the affairs of the Senate and the National Assembly as a whole.

“We wish to, therefore, as a forum urge Mr. President-elect, all senators-elect as well as the leadership of the APC, to support the candidacy of distinguished Senator George Akume as the Senate president of the eighth Senate and the retention of the seat of the Senate President in the North-Central,” the statement said.

It added that Akume as the current minority leader in the Senate has brought experience, maturity, hard work and integrity to bear in the discharge of his duties, while the North-Central zone by its “impressive performance” at the last general elections deserves the retention of the seat of the Senate President under an APC-led government.

“By overwhelmingly returning the president-elect and six APC governors, the zone is a critical stakeholder in the formation of a new APC government. It, therefore, deserves to keep and not to lose the Senate President’s seat,” it added.
