Top seed Serena Williams breezed into the second round of the Madrid Open with a comfortable straight sets win over Madison Brengle.
In the all-American clash, Williams came through 6-0 6-1 in 55 minutes to line up a meeting with Sloane Stephens.
Things were not so easy for second seed Simona Halep, who crashed out at the first hurdle to France’s Alize Cornet.
Cornet defeated her Romanian opponent 7-6 (8/6) 6-3 and will face Italy’s Roberta Vinci in the next round.
Vinci earned her place with a battling 2-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 win over Monica Puig.
Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki made light work of Jarmila Gajdosova with a 6-3 6-0 victory, while Samantha Stosur won a three-set encounter with Angelique Kerber and Tsvertana Pironkova defeated Camila Giorgi.
Third seed Maria Sharapova also went through after a regulation 6-2 6-3 win over Timea Bacsinszky, but sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard lost 0-6 6-3 6-3 to Barbora Strycova.
Garbine Muguruza won the all-Spanish clash with Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-1 6-1, while Caroline Garcia, Andrea Petkovic, Christina McHale and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won their first-round matches.
Italy’s Sara Errani progressed following the retirement of her opponent Paula Badosa Gibert when the score was 3-0 in her favour in the first set, while Coco Vandeweghe defeated Sabine Lisicki and fourth seed Petra Kvitova came through against Olga Govortsova.
…As Federer Wins Istanbul Open
Top seed Roger Federer won the final of the Istanbul Open on Sunday with a straight sets win over Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas.
The Swiss world No 2 came through 6-3 7-6 (13-11) with a superb display of tennis to win his first clay title in three years.
Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam winner, showed imperious form ahead of the French Open, beating world No 23 Cuevas to claim his fourth ATP Tour final of the year and the 85th title of his career in his 128th career final.
