Following the inconclusive Wednesday meeting of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the northeast has been seriously pressurising the party to zone the Senate presidency to the region.
Top party chieftains from the northeast have taken to their case to president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the need to look the way of the northeast for the Senate presidency.
Recall that the Wednesday night meeting of APC NEC ended in deadlock after the members failed to reach a consensus to zone the Senate leadership to a particular region. Gen Buhari and chairman of the party, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, have been saddled with the responsibility of taking the final decision on which zone the slot should go to.
MN Weekend gathered that top party stalwarts in the region are currently holding talks with the leaders of the party, pressing them on points why the northeast deserves the top position.
According to sources who pled anonymity, top members of the party from the northeast, as well as their supporters from other regions, are making a strong case, drawing attention to the numerous times that the north central has occupied the position.
One if the sources said, “Since 1999, the north central has benefitted immensely such that in 2011, the state took not only the Senate president’s seat, it also added the minority leader position to its kitty.
“In times of adversity, the northeast was always consistent with opposition parties, even with its votes. That is why some of us are pushing in the party that we should be given the Senate president slot. This is the time to reward the zone and not take party loyalty for granted, which the PDP did to most of their loyal party members when they were unjustly denied votes during primaries last year.
“In fact, some of us are afraid that if justice is not done, what happened in 2011 in the House of Representatives may likely occur in the Senate, but we do not pray it gets to that.”
The source further added that “top APC stalwarts from the zone, including a former number 2 man from the region, have intensified their bid for the president-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari and the chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to understand the need to zone the party to the northeast.
“They are especially not comfortable that the party is considering zoning the presidency of the Upper Chamber to the northcentral that has been in the saddle for eight years running, while the northeast sat and watched.
“We believe in our leaders to do the right thing,” he added.
