Kazakhstan Current President, Nursultan Nazarbayev Retains Seat

Nursultan Nazarbayev, the current president of Kazakhstan who has ruled the country since 1989 has secured a new 5-year term in the just concluded elections in the country.

According to the Central Election Commission, Nazarbayev won 97.7 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election.

Al Jazeera reports that the country’s marginalised opposition did not put forward any candidates for the election and Nazarbayev ran against two candidates widely seen as pro-government figures.

Said figures are 68-year old Turgun Syzdykov, representing the Communist People’s Party of Kazakhstan and who campaigned on  an anti-globalisation platform and 63-year old Abelgazy Kusainov who contested independently and ran a campaign touching on Kazakhstan’s environmental problems.

Nazarbayev, whom polls in Kazakhstan show enjoys the support of his people, turned his steppe nation into the second largest economy in the former Soviet Union and No 2 post-Soviet oil producer after Russia with the help of a $200 billion direct foreign investment.
