One hundred and thirty-eight federal, state and private universities universities in Nigeria will benefit from a N1.3 trillion fund set aside under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
President Goodluck Jonathan said this last Saturday while speaking at the 24th Convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna).
Represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. James Okojie, Jonathan said the fund, which would be disbursed through a six-year-period, was made available as part of his administration’s intervention to tackle challenges confronting the country’s tertiary institutions.
“Government has, through the TETFund, made the sum of N1.3 trillion to be disbursed to all public universities over a six-year period,” he said.
The President noted that the funds would be targeted at the improvement of infrastructure, personnel developments and provision of other teaching and learning facilities.
“Existing universities have no reason to be left out of the transformation in the tertiary education system,” he added.
Institutions to benefit from the fund include 40 federal universities, two of which are are Military and Paramilitary, 39 are state-owned universities as well as 59 private universities.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Musbau Akanji, had earlier noted that a total of 3,490 students were graduated, 2,903 First degrees, 105 post-Graduate Diplomas, 453 Masters’ degrees and 29 Doctor of Philosophy (PhDs)
