Standing on hot coal, lying down on knives, and now meditation in a pot of boiling oil? You can never see it all with Buddhist monks.
A Youtube video of a monk meditating calmly in a pot of boiling oil has caused an online frenzy leaving people in shock and wonder.
He is seen in the video with eyes closed as if in prayer. The monk, from Thailand’s Nong Bua Lamphu province, looks at ease despite sitting in a vessel of oil with a fire raging underneath. He even stretches his hand to touch things people bring to him. Even though many followers flock around him, some people believe it is an illusion.
A science instructor, Jessada Denduangboripant, of Chulalongkorn University, has said that there is no proof that the oil is really boiling.
“The only way to prove it is to measure the temperature of the oil he’s sitting in,” she wrote. “The oil doesn’t look like it’s boiling, and the pan just looks strange. The pan might have two layers to insulate the heat.”
Whether or not it is boiling, one would have to admit it looks pretty much believable.
