Lagos State University has been shut down indefinitely. The institution’s embattled VC, Obafunwa, says its for “election recess” but the workers ready for another round of squabbles.
Students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, have been asked to vacate the university with immediate effect until a contrary announcement is made.
The order was contained in a statement by the embattled Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. John Obafunwa, who called the closure an “election recess.”
It would seem to the ordinary observer that the institution is being closed for the 2015 general elections which begin on Saturday March 28.
However, with no official date for resumption given, many have assumed that the announcement is a fall-out of last week’s face-off between the Obafunwa-led management and the various trade unions.
Protesting workers pelted Obafunwa out of the institution with ‘pure water’ sachets and demanded an acting VC from Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola.
The institution’s 20th convocation ceremony originally billed for Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th of March was indefinitely postponed.
Following the ‘Pure-Water-Coup’, the LASU chapter Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Adekunle Idris said Obafunwa was “sent out of the university, he would not return again”.
Student Pulse gathered that the shut-down followed Monday’s forceful opening of LASU’s two entrance gates which allowed for a resumption of inbound and outbound vehicular movement.
The protesting workers, who had locked the gates since last week’s ‘ouster’, were angered by the reopening and began another wave of protests.
Another face-off is likely as the workers condemn Obafuwa’s announcement, pointing out that no other tertiary institution in Nigeria is going on “election recess.”
