9 Easy Ways to Conserve Your Phone Data

In the early days of cell phones, it was all about the minutes, voice minutes, that is, because people actually used their phones to call each other.

Today, it’s all about the data, even if your plan is “unlimited,” there’s almost always an asterik.

Whatever your plan, it makes sense to conserve data, and what are the easiest ways to do that?

Play Youtube videos at low resolution- Watching YouTube videos on mobile is a sure way to finish your data, but if you HAVE to do it, use the “three dots” menu in the top right corner to play them at a lower resolution so you won’t kiss half of your data goodbye.

Turn off your data when you are not using it.

Disable auto play videos in Facebook and Instagram- If your friends share a lot of videos, do this immediately. In the Facebook app, tap More > scroll down to Settings > Videos and Photos > select Auto-play and slide to disable “Smart Auto-play.” Then choose “Use Wifi Only” or “Never Play Videos Automatically.” In Instagram, go to your profile > Settings (top right) > Preload videos > select “Only on Wi-Fi.”

Always connect to Wi-Fi wherever and whenever possible.

Turn off background app refresh- All of your apps can auto-refresh, meaning your phone will allow them to check for new content and download it, even if you’re not currently using the app. Turn off as many of these as possible so you’re not losing data without even realizing it.

Avoid video chats- Stop Skyping! and all the other video calling if you want to save data.

Avoid online gaming.

Do not stream music- It’s so easy to stream music, you might not realize what it’s doing to your data plan. What it’s doing is killing your data. If a music service streams at a 320Kbps bit rate, that’s 2.4MB of data per minute, or a whopping 115MB per hour.

Do not stream videos- If music streaming is bad, video trumps it by an order of magnitude. Awesome though it may be to have fun with episodes of “Empire” or trending YouTube videos, streaming can swallow as much as 50MB per minute.

Using a lot of data can end up costing you more money than you bargained for, so, be smart and conserve your data with the above tips.
