Gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, killed about five persons and wounded dozens when they attacked Ananum village in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, yesterday.

An eyewitness, Ages Tarza, told Vanguard that the gunmen numbering over 200, invaded the village and started shooting, killing five persons, while many escaped with bullet wounds.
Tarza said Fulani herdsmen had been attacking Tiv villages in the local government for some time now.
He said: “Instead of providing security, security personnel have been arresting and detaining our people, who are innocent and have not attacked a single Fulani man.
“A few days ago, robbers attacked and killed a Fulani man and our people were arrested and detained.
“The herdsmen attacked two of our villages, Ananum and Wahanye, and reduced them to rubble.”
He added that after the attack on Saturday, the council chairman, Capt. Douglas Ndatse, in company of security men, inspected the damage in Ananum village, only for the attackers to return on Sunday to do more damage.
Tarza, who is the Chairman of Tiv Cultural and Social Association, TCSA, in Donga Local Government, called on the government to find a lasting solution to the problem.
Confirming the report, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP, Joseph Kwaji, said gunmen invaded Ananum village on Saturday and Sunday and burnt some houses.
He explained that before the attack, a Fulani man was slaughtered in the village, which prompted the attack.
Kwaji said before police arrived the scene, the gunmen had already fled.
He, however, noted that investigation into the matter was ongoing to bring the perpetrators to book.
The police spokesman assured that the attack would not in any way affect the forthcoming elections as police were battle ready for any eventuality.
